Extract from Hobby HiFi 3/05 (TIW 300) Visaton has introduced the successor to its 30 cm TIW woofer which has led the field for nigh on twenty years. The theoretically calculated maximum linear deflection of 7.5 mm stayed the same; but in the border zone above that level, the TIW 300 is far better-natured than its predecessor. In doing so it not only achieves the tremendous low-frequency level accuracy of the TIW 360, it even exceeds it. By using a heavy diaphragm and a correspondingly more powerful driver, Visaton's Friedemann Hausdorf has managed to reduce the size of the cabinet considerably while at the same time ensuring maximum bass response : a size of 80 to 100 litres is perfectly acceptable to produce the full extent of the sound pressure at less than 30 hertz; with the TIW 360, it was necessary to allow for up to 140 litres. The sensitivity and lower limiting frequency have remained the same in comparison with the predecessor. This makes the TIW 300 at home not only in subwoofer constructions producing lots of deep bass but also in large-format three-way constructions where it is quite happy to join forces with a smaller mid-range driver of the 13 cm category, thanks to the relatively high separating frequency. Verdict: the TIW 300 is a worthy successor to the TIW 360 with almost exactly the same acoustic characteristics but a dramatically reduced thirst for cabinet space. Extract from Klang & Ton 4/05 (TIW 300) In the laboratory, the TIW demonstrates excellent attenuation, while the sensitivity of this driver makes a very good impression for a 30 cm speaker with a mean sound pressure of 92 dB. The frequency response is an absolutely perfect curve up to 1 kHz, even though the TIW should not, ideally, be subjected to such a broad range. Used as a woofer in a classic three-way construction up to about 400 Hz, this really high-quality bass driver will be an excellent choice. It is then possible to ignore the K3 peak in the distortion graph, which is at 520 Hz and well out of harm's way. The TIW 300 convinced us fully, both in terms of its laboratory readings and its actual performance and is definitely worth a closer look.
