SUB T-20.39

Characteristics and sound properties

The compact SUB T-20.39 subwoofer makes use of the same cabinet as the SUB W-20.39. In contrast, it uses the more powerful TIW 200 XS 8 OHM high-end woofer. The TIW 200 XS 8 OHM, designed through and through as a long-stroke driver, achieves an even lower level of limiting frequency and an increase in level accuracy. Its bass reproduction is exceptionally clear-cut.

As a result, the SUB T-20.39 is suitable for inclusion in small and medium-sized, high-grade speaker cabinets (e.g. ARIA, ARIA 2, COUPLET ), whether stereo or multi-channel systems. It is powerful enough to deliver hard-hitting bass attacks in normal rooms but is still highly compact in terms of its external dimensions.

Extract from Hobby HiFi 5/05 (TIW 200 XS)

The TIW series contains the highest-quality woofer drivers made by Visaton, the loudspeaker manufacturer. The TIW 200 XS is the smallest member of this series of products.
The current release of this product, the TIW 200 XS, reflects the original parameters to a large extent. Although the physical loss resistance has increased from 0.6 to 0.84 kg/s, it is still an absolutely incredible value.
As regards diaphragm stroke, the TIW 200 XS is the largest among the TIW woofers: with a voice coil depth of no less than 30 mm, this enables a voice-coil extension of eleven millimetres. This enables it to match even the TIW 250 in terms of air displacement and this value comes remarkably close to the 8W7-3 by JL Audio.
Nine pole piece holes and openings in the aluminium diecast basket behind the damper ensure that the air displaced by the diaphragm and damper can circulate unhindered and noiselessly. The smaller vents arranged in a ring around the central pole piece hole vent the inner space of the magnet arrangement. This feature gains in importance as the diaphragm stroke increases.
Verdict: Visaton's TIW 200 XS opens up a new dimension in woofer construction. This manufacturer from Haan, Germany offers one of the best 20 cm woofers available at a remarkably reasonable price.

Extract from Klang & Ton 2/04 (TIW 200 XS)

The highly sturdy diecast basket, which is also extremely well vented, is a commendable feature of the TIW 200 XS by Visaton. The large-format rear venting holes under the damper, which effectively prevent compression distortion on longer cone excursion, are a laudable highlight. The issue of venting runs through the entire construction of the drivers. The idea of the pole piece hole is to vent the inside of the TIW and this function is rounded off by a ring of smaller holes in the back plate so that no cavity in the driver is left unvented. As regards the quality of materials, no corners have been cut. Visaton has included a high-quality elastic cone and the diaphragm and dustcap are not injection moulded pieces but genuine sandwich constructions made up of two polyester layers around a core of fibre glass webbing. The voice coil is coiled around a capton core with a height of no less than 30 mm. Our lab tests showed that the baffle resonance levels of the TIW (2,100 Hz) are well damped. In the distortion graph, the corresponding K3 peak is at 700 Hz - at a very reassuringly low level. Visaton recommend using this driver as a subwoofer but, in view of the very good results we achieved, the TIW should also be equally at home in a multiple-driver system - it would no doubt make a very good three-way woofer. It feels most at home in a bass reflex cabinet and, here, any number of solutions are possible from a compact, unobtrusive subwoofer to a full-blown deep bass woofer with a 70-Iitre cabinet. From the point of view of value-for-money, the excellent craftsmanship and well tuned technical characteristics definitely make it worth the 125 euros we paid.
